About The Position

The Exam School Initiative (ESI) is a racial equity initiative intended to expand access to Exam Schools for students who have been historically underrepresented as compared to the overall BPS student demographics who have been historically underrepresented in the three exam schools: Boston Latin Academy (BLA), the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science (O’Bryant) and Boston Latin School (BLS). The Office of Teaching & Learning seeks culturally responsive instructors who believe in the talent and potential of ESI students and will advance the racial equity mission of the program. ESI teachers will provide rigorous instruction during the four-week program while cultivating positive relationships with students and families.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Work in close collaboration with the teaching & learning office and the host school with shared goals in a student-centered, school-aligned, results-focused initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as site leader, supporting educators, providing constructive feedback, and fostering collaboration.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Current teacher or administrator in the Boston Public Schools.
  • Prior experience working in a BPS summer learning program and/or in close collaboration with a community-based organization
  • Technology-savvy
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity.
  • BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate between hosting building staff and ESI program staff
  • Secure needed permits for ESI to utilize site building
  • Co-facilitate on-site ESI student & staff orientation
  • Coordinate with ESI Site Coordinator ahead of program, to set up operations around the ESI host building
  • Be on-site and supervise the program as it relates to the host building for at least 6-hour day, 5 days per week for the four weeks of the summer program or until all students have been dismissed for the day (due to late/missed buses, students returning back to the school as a result of no parent/guardian being home to accept the student, etc).
  • Coordinate with interns on-site during program to support daily operations
  • Attend designated ESI team meetings to assist in facility planning
  • Assist ESI program staff in organizing field trips and “Fun Friday,” activities on and around the ESI building host site
  • Adhere to ESI policies and ensure compliance with policy across the site
  • Adhere to Superintendent Circulars, particularly with respect to student safety, and emphasize the importance of these policies to all staff
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all student-specific information
  • Complete all paperwork in a timely fashion
  • Monitor and respond to email, GChat, and phones closely during programming for communication from the Central Office, ESI staff, and families
  • Follow and train all staff on the ESI protocols for loading and unloading buses and for ensuring student and staff safety throughout the program, including daily preparation of bus labels and lists
  • Oversee the implementation of effective processes for student safety, health, and wellness.
  • Coordinate with related service providers to ensure appropriate student and staff schedules
  • Establish a safe and welcoming learning environment for students, families, and staff
  • Preparation and follow-up tasks as outlined.
  • Attend mandatory staff PD sessions and complete preparation work.
  • Receive, pack, unpack, and organize materials before and after the ESI program.
  • Collaborate with teachers and paraprofessionals to prepare and organize all curriculum, enrichment and instructional materials to be ready for classes each day
  • Coordinate and oversee “Student Showcase,” activities at your assigned site.
  • Provide support and management at one program site including during transitions arrival, dismissal, lunch, nurses office, and other student schedule logistics throughout the day
  • Support efforts to enroll and engage students and families in the ESI program
  • Participate in development of program schedule in advance of summer, including but not limited to overseeing the logistics of transportation and attendance
  • Support with coordination of logistics and operations
  • Engage and collaborate with staff in planning and problem-solving
  • Coordinate emergency response procedures in the event of emergency
