About The Position

This ER Tech position is located in the AMC Kenosha Emergency Department and is a part-time role, requiring 12 hours per week. The schedule includes one 05-17 shift weekly, every third weekend, and rotating holidays. The primary function of the ER Tech is to support physicians and registered nurses by performing various technical patient care tasks. These tasks include phlebotomy, patient transportation, monitoring vital signs and cardiac activity, wound care, inserting Foley catheters, and collecting lab specimens. Depending on state regulations, the ER Tech may also perform IV starts. Key responsibilities involve accurate documentation of procedures and patient information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), effective communication of patient observations and needs to the nursing staff, and facilitating communication with physicians to ensure coordinated patient care. The role also requires maintaining a clean and safe work environment, adhering to safety policies and standard precautions, and managing equipment by monitoring, troubleshooting minor issues, and arranging repairs for major malfunctions. Physical duties include patient positioning and transporting, which involve lifting, pushing, and pulling. The ER Tech must possess the knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care, understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan to assess and meet the specific needs of each patient as outlined in departmental policies.

Requirements

  • Nurse Aide in good standing as indicated with the State Registry in which the TM practices, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic license issued by the state in which the TM practices, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Intravenous license issued by the state in which the TM practices, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate license issued by the state in which the TM practices, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic license issued by the state in which the TM practices, or Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 1 year experience.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to work with Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, patients and their families.
  • Must maintain skill and recertification as required by regulation and organization.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and priorities.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Team members will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital based certifications (e.g.DNV, CARF or others).

Responsibilities

  • Assists the physicians and registered nurses in providing technical care of the patients by performing phlebotomy, transporting patients to other departments, placing patient on cardiac and vital sign monitors, performs wound care, inserts Foley catheters, and obtains lab specimens.
  • May perform IV starts if allowed by state regulations.
  • Documents information/procedures and promptly communicates observations, concerns and needs of the patient to the registered nurse.
  • Processes daily patient charges and/or related procedure through the Electronic Health record (EHR).
  • Collaborates with physicians to support communications required to facilitate patient care.
  • Coordinates and facilitates all forms of communications (phone, verbal, paging, electronic, fax, and EMS system).
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment, following department safety policies and standard precautions.
  • Monitors equipment and troubleshoots minor problems.
  • Arranges repair of major malfunctions.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
