About The Position

The ED Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of the Emergency Department which provide patients with emergent based care compliant with current regulations, policies and procedures. In addition, the ER Supervisor will assist as an ER staff nurse as needed.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) who has successfully graduated from an accredited School of Nursing and has a current license to practice in the state of Kansas
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and address questions from residents, family members, medical staff, other employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Current Kansas Nurse certification
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS Certification
  • Ability to sit, stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch and talk or hear.
  • Ability to regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous ER experience.
  • TNCC, STABLE, care of a burn patient, and PALS or PEARS certifications.
  • Prior supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the daily operations of the Emergency Department.
  • Receives and gives reports on patients in the ER at shift change, lunch break, etc.
  • Performs patient assessments.
  • Recognizes significant changes in the patient’s condition and notifies the physician when appropriate.
  • Uses good nursing judgment in life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and respiratory distress.
  • Initiates treatment using BLS, ACLS, and PEARS or PALS protocols.
  • Takes notes and carries out physicians’ orders.
  • Assists physicians with treatments and procedures.
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered by the physicians and oversees the Omnicell and medication area.
  • Works with competence and accuracy using the appropriate nursing process.
  • Keeps accurate electronic and written medical records in regards to the patients and as a reference for the doctors.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Provides educational information to patients and families.
  • Maintains a good rapport and professionalism with patients and families and friends, physicians, co-workers, staff, and other hospital “customers”.
  • Maintains proficiency in the operation of medical technical equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance with the electronic medical record.
  • Keeps the emergency room and its bays clean, stocked, with supplies and equipment, and ready to receive patients.
  • Follows hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
  • Review, develop and implement policies and procedures to improve service delivery and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with other department personnel within CHS to provide patient centered care.
  • Recognizes and evaluates personal / departmental strengths and weaknesses; setting goals for improvement and seeks opportunities for professional development.
  • As a member of the Leadership Team; promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization while supporting the overall initiatives of CHS.
  • Comply with the personnel policies, department policies and CHS Code of Conduct.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Maintains staff by selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Provides training to the ER personnel related to software and equipment education / updates.
  • Accomplishes positive staff performance results by coaching, counseling, and/or disciplining employees by monitoring and assessing skill set and/or performance concerns.
  • Performance can be improved by conducting training; or implementing processes, policies / procedures.
  • Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing organization standards; adhering to legal regulations.
  • Gather resources; resolving operations problems; maintaining reference manuals; implementing new procedures.
  • Manage and/or oversee scheduling of Emergency Department personnel.
  • Provides quality service by enforcing quality and customer service standards.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications.
  • Maintains effective and consistent communication with the ER department.
  • Complete evaluations of personnel as assigned.
  • Plan and conduct regular training sessions, drills, and exercises for staff to ensure preparedness
  • Lead and participate in the Code Orange drills.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of training programs and drills, making necessary improvements.
