About The Position

Provides guidance and leadership to a team of skilled automotive and equipment maintenance technicians for the City of Charlotte Aviation Department. The position supervises the scheduling of staff and prioritizes the needs of the shift. It provides critical customer service by consistently communicating with airport tenants/divisions and vendor for fleet availability and customer concerns. The Shop Supervisor monitors, reviews, and analyzes key performance reports for vehicle repair status updates and completion of work orders. The position oversees the maintenance of shop equipment and monitors the shop area to eliminate unsafe and hazardous working conditions. Major emphasis for this position includes leadership, customer service, innovative approach to problem solving, and communication. Work is accomplished through monitoring of expenditures; recruitment, training and development; and performance management. Liaison with other agencies related to Facility needs such as Building Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, Risk Management, etc. This position works directly with airport vendors to resolve escalated problems.

Requirements

  • Requires graduation from high school/GED and five years of related experience, or an associate degree and three years of related experience, or bachelor’s and one year of related experience/industry/military/job specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.
  • Experience must include one year of supervisory experience in an automotive shop environment with management of diverse fleet and equipment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of: Principles and practices of Fleet Management Methods, practices, procedures, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Pertinent local, State, and Federal laws, ordinances, and rules Safety practices and occupational hazards of equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Principles and methods of supervision and management.
  • Knowledge of Fleet Management Information Systems Knowledge of parts management and inventory
  • Skilled at: Conflict management with subordinate staff and Partners.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Abilities to: Effectively supervise and coordinate the activities of equipment repair, maintenance, and support personnel through subordinate supervisors.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and vendors Translate general work plans into detailed operational programs; to prepare and maintain work surveys, reports and records.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
  • Prepare and analyze reports to ensure efficiency and productivity goals are met.
  • Analyze complex information and exercises independent judgment in arriving at conclusions.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a certified technical automotive program, and ASE Master Certification preferred.
  • ASE and other similar related certifications for Master/Heavy are desired.
  • Significant experience in performing journeyman level automotive work on all types of light and heavy equipment is also preferred.
  • Valid Class A CDL driver’s license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight of work performed by employees engaged in the repair and maintenance of Light/Medium/Heavy duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Advises management and partners of technical issues related to vehicles and equipment; works to resolve issues; in lieu of fleet manager, attends to issues that arise through an escalation path.
  • Analyzes data related to equipment repairs and maintenance and overall shop performance; prepares reports; presents information to leadership and maintains records on operations.
  • Monitors and controls expenditures related to shop budget to ensure service delivery costs are within scope.
  • Assists the Fleet Manager in leading the shop daily
  • Provide technical support to staff by answering questions and acting as a teacher and mentor to employees
  • Identify current and future training needs for employees
  • Monitors work order status and dates to increase fleet availability
  • Build credibility and trust with staff, Aviation division and other airport agencies, and local vendors by developing relationships and establishing trust with partners
  • Assist in efforts to develop procedures, processes, and practices to maintain a safe and productive working environment
  • Monitor and document employee performance as related to annual performance reviews
  • Perform other duties as assigned
