About The Position

The City of Aurora is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for Equipment Service Worker / Equipment Technician in the Division of Fleet. Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work in the diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and reconditioning of all City vehicles and equipment. Repairs and replaces gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, clutches, brakes, radiator, universal, differentials, hydraulic and exhaust systems. Drives service trucks and performs road service calls, drive vehicles for road testing to and from maintenance facilities and runs errands to supply houses. Other duties of these positions may include but are not limited to: Performing preventative and routine maintenance and repair work on all types of City vehicles and equipment as well as locating, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical defects; Performs welding and fabrication in forming, bending, and tempering metals on various vehicles or equipment; Prepares list of parts needed for automobile and equipment repair and forwards to supervisor for approval; utilizes testing and repair equipment to diagnose, locate, and repair complex faults found in various 6, 12,and 24 volt electrical systems. Designs and builds custom circuits to support various automotive accessories.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; preferably supplemented by completion of vocational courses in automotive mechanics (for Equipment Service Worker).
  • Minimum of three years' experience in servicing and maintaining automotive vehicles and equipment (for Equipment Service Worker).
  • Possession of a Class 'B' CDL within 6 months of hire (for Equipment Service Worker).
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; preferably supplemented by completion of vocational courses in automotive technology (for Equipment Technician).
  • Two years of experience as an Equipment Service Worker or other equivalent experience (for Equipment Technician).
  • Possession of a Class 'A' CDL Driver's License with six (6) months of hire (for Equipment Technician).
  • Six (6) ASE Certifications or EVT Fire Apparatus Technician level 1-3 or EVT Ambulance Technician level 1-3 within six (6) months of hire (for Equipment Technician).
  • Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including a written exam, physical, drug screen, and background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel mechanics as applied to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to weld and to perform simple blacksmith operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of all types of automotive shop tools and equipment.
