The Equipment Operator position at Lower Valley Water District involves operating various heavy and medium-sized equipment for the construction, repair, and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The role requires adherence to safety regulations and effective communication with the public regarding maintenance activities. The operator will also be responsible for preventive maintenance, emergency response, and providing direction to crew members under general supervision.

  • Operates backhoe, Vac-Con, and other heavy and medium equipment required for specific jobs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on medium and heavy equipment.
  • Digs manholes for water systems and operates a pipe locator to locate meters, valve boxes, and manholes.
  • Interacts respectfully with the public to inform them of waterline maintenance activities.
  • Ensures adherence to all traffic safety regulations and procedures at all times.
  • Participates with crew leaders and other crew members in the overall operation of the District's water and wastewater systems.
  • Responds to water emergencies by assessing the situation and coordinating the work crew.
  • Provides work direction and training to other crew members.
  • May operate a dump truck to transport heavy and medium equipment to the work site.
  • Inspects, cleans, greases, fuels, and services heavy and medium equipment as necessary.
  • Operates heavy and medium equipment under immediate supervision for emergency or training purposes.
  • Complies with all safety standards related to equipment and facility operations.
  • Engages in manual labor as necessary to work assignments.
  • Performs pavement cuts and inspects, diagnoses, and repairs failures in water and wastewater mains and manholes.
  • Locates main and service lines; installs, repairs, and replaces mains and water meters.
  • Performs inspections on new installations to water and wastewater systems and reports any needed repairs.
  • Performs meter change outs and is subject to on-call duties, including weekends and 24-hour emergency call out.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, officials, and the public.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two or more years of experience operating heavy equipment, tractors, backhoe, Vac-Con, and related automotive equipment.
  • Valid Texas Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License; must have an acceptable driving record.
  • Class I Wastewater Collection System License issued by the State of Texas required within 12 months of hire date.
  • Class 'C' Water Distribution Operator License issued by the State of Texas required within 26 months of hire date.
  • Class III Wastewater Collection System License issued by the State of Texas required within 36 months of hire date.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.
