About The Position

Drives various kinds of trucks and operates various types of equipment engaged in the construction, repair and maintenance of streets, landfills, alleys, county facilities, grounds and in clearing rights-of-way. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County’s insurance carrier.
  • Less than high school education; high school diploma or GED certificate preferred but not required, plus a minimum of one year of experience as a truck driver or equipment operator.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must possess a Texas Class "C" Driver License.
  • Good knowledge of the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to operation of such motorized equipment.
  • Ability to service and make minor repairs on equipment and to know safety standards and prevent hazards.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate equipment effectively and safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Good driving record.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other employees.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly operates, inspects, and evaluates machinery, equipment, and systems to include front-end loaders, pneumatic roller, flat wheel roller, maintainer, tractor-operated auger, chip spreader, sheepsfoot roller, sweeper, compactor, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc. and makes appropriate adjustments in order to be certain that vehicle or equipment is in proper operating condition prior to leaving for the job site.
  • Performs routine maintenance support and activities to include maintenance and construction work, drainage work, traffic control, right-of-way mowing, etc.
  • Drive a dump truck or other truck hauling materials and equipment to construction or repair sites.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a maintainer in a trainee status.
  • Perform preventive maintenance work and make minor repairs on equipment (including welding).
  • Depending on assignment, may supervise and/or direct the work of a patch crew on an intermittent basis.
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with Nueces County organization policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities may include training employees, planning, assigning and directing work and resolving problems.
