Requirements

Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Skills in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license and obtain a Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
