Requirements

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skills in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license and obtain a Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
