An Equipment Operator III is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and care of the most complex heavy construction equipment. Work requires significant skill in order to manipulate equipment. Allocation to this class establishes the most complex highly skilled equipment operation as the primary function of the position. Duties will require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of the most complex heavy construction equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements. Employees work under the hazardous conditions associated with utilities, moving traffic, and adverse weather conditions; and have responsibility for the safety of coworkers while equipment operation is being performed. Employees in this class are required to use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures in performing assignments. This class is subject to frequent emergency call-out and incumbents must be willing to work scheduled stand-by and over-time on nights, weekends, and holidays as required. This class performs related duties as required. Transportation Assignment: An Equipment Operator III assigned to Transportation is responsible for safe, economical, and efficient operation of all of the most complex equipment such as the asphalt distributor truck and motor grader (fine grading) on a consistent and regular basis, in addition to the operation of all related equipment noted in the Equipment Operator I and II classifications as required. An Equipment Operator III assists in the supervision of a small crew or gives direction to subordinates or contract personnel based on assignment. The Equipment Operator III is the highest level of the Equipment Operator classification series. This position is distinguished from the Equipment Operator II by the complexity and highest level of skill required to operate all equipment in the assigned department. Supervision is received from a foreman or supervisor, who reviews incumbents' work through on-site observation of work in progress and completed projects. Duties will require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of the most complex heavy construction equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements.
