About The Position

The purpose of this position is to operate equipment utilizing mechanisms that are somewhat complex to operate, and require more dexterity and finesse, as well as the operation of highly-specialized equipment, and/or larger vehicles requiring a higher level of skill to drive and maneuver in and around confined spaces. This is the second level in a series of three levels of Heavy Equipment Operators distinguished by increasing levels of scope, independence, responsibility and decision-making. Positions at the “II” level require possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate straight drive and automatic trucks.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid CDL Class B with Airbrakes and no restrictions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment including skid steers, mowing tractors, wheel loaders, etc. in the operation of the transfer station, material recovery facility, and mulching operation.
  • Drives roll-off container truck to haul materials to and from work sites: maneuvers and positions vehicle to allow for proper alignment of containers to be placed or retrieved; connects container to truck and operates winch, checking for proper load distribution and support for the vehicle; secures all doors, gates, and fasteners to prevent spillage or loss of load during transport; and dumps material at appropriate location.
  • Operates skid steer, backhoe-mounted loader, and wheel loaders of similar size to load and/or move gravel, dirt, sand, mulch, recyclables, and other materials for smaller projects and loads: and utilizes skid steer to clear debris or fix small ruts or issues around county facilities.
  • Operates dump trucks or roll-off to haul gravel or other materials to other county facilities.
  • Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day: performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.
  • Performs manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects: lifts, moves, loads, and unloads materials, equipment, tools, and supplies; digs ditches, trenches, and holes manually or utilizing power equipment; shovels, rakes, spreads, compacts, and levels dirt, rock, asphalt, cement, and other materials; retrieves supplies, materials, tools, equipment and other items and runs various errands as needed; collects, transports, loads and unloads materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite; removes litter, and debris from around work area or Solid Waste facilities.
  • Uses mowing and landscape equipment to do lawn maintenance around Solid Waste facilities.
  • Serves as backup to scale operator and scale house attendant.
  • Serves as backup office personnel.
  • Takes deposits to bank.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
