About The Position

Maintains campus grounds to include, snow and ice management, lawn maintenance, landscaping, leaf collection, excavation, tree-work, etc. Provides functional guidance to Equipment Operator I's. Reports to Groundskeeping Supervisor or other designee.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of two years of experience operating earthmoving (excavator), tracked (skid steer), snow management (dump truck with spreader), specialty (street sweeper), and other motorized equipment used in construction, repair, and maintenance of campus grounds and facilities.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the operating backhoes.
  • May be required to work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must possess valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsements and safe driving record to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Ohio Revised Code or obtain as soon as possible with extension up to 6 months from date of hire.

  • Operating and maintaining various types of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., mower, tractor, chain saw, sod cutter, rotary tiller, snow thrower, dump truck, refuse truck, street sweeper, tracked skid steer, front end loader, bucket truck, backhoe, excavator, hydro-seeder etc.)
  • Use of hand and power tools
  • Utilizing mobile and stationary computer devices for data input (e.g., iPad, iPod, laptop, desktop)
  • Carry out or assist in implementing changes
  • Lift up to 100 pounds
  • Manage time effectively and set priorities
  • Operate two-way radio
  • Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and to calculate area and volume, and percentages, calculate and estimate materials )
  • Perform maintenance within the scope of operators/owners manual
  • Read and interpret building documents including construction drawings
  • Write (e.g., work orders and logs), and accurately follow oral, written, and graphic instructions
  • Train and provide effective work direction to other employees
  • Work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Work independently and with a team
  • Promote customer service

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment such as backhoe, excavator, compact tracked/skid steer loader, zero turn mower, compact tractors, UTVs, full size tractors, dump trucks, snow plows, leaf collector, front-end loaders, hydro-seeder, refuse trucks, bucket truck, street sweeper.
  • Provides functional guidance to Equipment Operator I's, employees in a lower pay grade, or student employees as needed; may train and instruct on proper work procedures, assign and monitor work activities, and coordinate workflow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met and priorities are recognized; may participate in training new departmental employees and other university staff (e.g., CDL).
  • May work with university contractors.
  • Performs snow and ice management to include, spreading salt or sand, plowing snow, pre-treating hardscape.
  • Maintains campus lawns to include, mowing and repairing grass (hydro-seeding), and slope mowing.
  • Creates or reduces landscape beds, apply chemicals, hardscape repair and installation.
  • Collects and blows leaves.
  • Assists in excavation work to include, shoring, labor, measuring/spotting, and utility location.
  • Plants, trims, and remove trees.
  • Cleans and repairs streets, cleans catch basins and exterior drains.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, checks and services equipment; greases and oils machinery; checks tires and lights.
  • Serves as first response to support utility failures and/or repairs (e.g., failures in water lines, steam lines, storm water piping, sanitary piping, electrical lines/conduit, any and all utility support equipment and structures).
  • Performs general labor and maintenance functions; loads and unloads freight; rigging; arranges stock in warehouse; repairs guardrails; moves equipment. May use transit for setting grades. May drive a truck with tow trailer to haul equipment and supplies to pick up and deliver materials, equipment, and personnel.
  • Performs traffic control for roadway, utility and tree work zones.
  • Performs departmental related duties as assigned.
