About The Position

The Equipment Operator II is responsible for maintaining city streets, parks, right-of-ways, esplanades, ball fields, grounds, and drainage systems. This role involves installing and maintaining utility lines, sewer and storm water systems, and water mains. Operate a variety of equipment, including but not limited to pickup trucks, dump trucks, stake body or flatbed trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, track hoes, tractors, asphalt paving machines, rollers, lowboy trailers, oil distributors, and excavators, with experienced proficiency. Load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites safely. Ensure equipment is properly secured using chains, binders, and other safety measures. Excavate, repair, and maintain streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage ditches, and culverts. Participate in asphalt paving, grading, and other construction tasks as required. Establish and maintain safe work zones by placing safety cones, signs, and directing traffic using hand-held flags. Perform manual labor as needed to support utility and public works projects. Assign tasks and establish work priorities for crew members on projects, providing guidance and supervision. Train staff on proper work methods to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and departmental standards. Inspect vehicles and equipment for proper fuel, fluids, and safe operating conditions. Conduct preventive maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, minor repairs, and adjustments. Identify and report needed repairs to prevent accidents and equipment failure. Observe and recommend improvements to safety procedures, responding to employee concerns and accident incidents. Report unsafe conditions, accidents, and injuries to supervisors promptly. Continuously seek operational improvements, efficiency enhancements, and teamwork strategies to deliver high-quality public service. Must have and maintain, without interruption, required certifications and licenses. Works assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policies. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 240 hours operating heavy equipment and a minimum of two (2) years of experience operating vehicles heavier than standard passenger vehicles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas Class B CDL and a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of recognized equipment operation training programs (e.g., TML or A&M Extension).
  • Traffic Control I (Flagging) certification.
  • Utility Safety, Trenching, and Shoring safety certifications.
  • Class A CDL for operating heavy equipment.
