About The Position

This is skilled work in the operation of standard, heavy, or large complex trucks and related maintenance and construction equipment, and manual work related to the operation of such equipment. Depending on assignment, work may include the safe and efficient operation of trucks exceeding 1800 #GVW in performing street and sewer maintenance and repair, grass and lot mowing, cleaning, and transporting personnel and materials. As employee advances, work work may also require the operation of sewer and drain cleaning apparatus, compressors, jack hammers and asphalt rakes; loading and unloading materials and supervision over a small group of unskilled workers. In some assignments, work may include trucks exceeding 18000 #GVW, vactor cleaners, payloaders, leaf machines, and small rollers. Additional work may include the safe and efficient operation, routine maintenance, and minor repair of large complex trucks, street sweepers, paving machines, bulldozers, motorgraders, large rollers, back hoes, snow plows, and sand spreaders. Work is typically 40 hours per week, with a 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. shift. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS This is skilled work in the operation of standard trucks and related equipment, and manual work related to the operation of the vehicle. Work of this class includes the safe and efficient operation of trucks exceeding 1800 #GVW in performing street and sewer maintenance and repair, grass and lot mowing, and cleaning, and transporting personnel and materials. Work also requires the operation of sewer and drain cleaning apparatus, compressors, jack hammers and asphalt rakes in some positions; others may require work in loading an unloading materials including supervision over a small group of unskilled workers. Work may also require the operation of equipment of a higher classification on a trainee or limited performance basis. Work assignments are specific and are reviewed for compliance with schedules and instructions.

Requirements

  • Three months to one year of experience in the operation of standard trucks, tractors, and similar; or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge of the traffic laws involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.
  • Knowledge of city street layout.
  • Ability to operate automotive and related equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to detect operating defects.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under varying climatic conditions.
  • Skill in the operation of the assigned equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at time of application.
  • Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Responsibilities

  • Drives a truck, participates in and directs the loading and unloading of materials; checks condition of truck, and reports the need of repairs or adjustments.
  • Operates a tractor pulling gang grass mowers, or cycle bar; breaks up cut grass.
  • Uses caution when driving so as to avoid accidents or over-straining the equipment.
  • Operates a winch mounted on a truck to lift and load stumps and other heavy objects.
  • Operates compressors, jack hammers and asphalt rakes.
  • Performs semi-skilled tasks requiring the use of hand tools.
  • Performs related work as required.
