About The Position

General Transportation Tech I: Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. General Transportation Tech II: Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. General Transportation Tech Ill: Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • No education required.
  • GTT I = No experience required
  • GTT II = 1 year experience
  • GTT III = 2 years experience
  • Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
  • Inspects and processes damage claims.
  • Verifies and processes maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
