About The Position

This is a safety sensitive position which operates and maintains, with a high degree of proficiency and skill on equipment, which includes various types and styles of tractor mowers and herbicide spray equipment, backhoe, single-axle dump truck and water truck. Maintain waterways, canals, laterals, ditches, and rights-of-way by mowing and/or spraying weeds on District property. Operating necessary equipment for backfill, dust control and loading materials into trucks to be hauled. Responsible to the area Maintenance Foreman. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Must have at least six (6) months’ experience with agricultural/heavy equipment basic operations, basic herbicide spraying, and basic mechanical skills and tire service is a plus.
  • Education/Experience substitution: A combination of education, training and experience may be applied.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable; a CDL Class A or B is preferred; N (tanker) endorsement preferred.
  • Other: Must pass post-offer, pre-employment drug screen, medical exam, and motor vehicle report in compliance with District insurance guidelines.
  • Must have knowledge of general agricultural equipment, principles of operation and servicing of stated types of equipment and traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in equipment operation; perform minor preventative maintenance on equipment; follow oral and written instructions; read gauges on equipment; operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be skilled in coordinating hand and foot movements to properly operate controls on equipment according to manufacture specifications and safety guidelines to accomplish work.
  • Must have the ability to judge depths of cuts, proximity of obstructions, and conditions of material in which working; must have the ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing; basic arithmetic; general office equipment and computer literacy a plus; ability to exercise independent judgment; maintain accurate records; demonstrate attention to detail; understand and follow broad or complex instructions; use logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems when necessary; use initiative and independent judgment while recognizing when to refer matters to the attention of Management; maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely performs required maintenance on all District waterways, canals, laterals, ditches, and rights-of-ways.
  • Routinely performs a mowing pattern to control the growth of weeds on all District waterways, canals, laterals, ditches, and rights-of-ways.
  • Responsible for servicing of equipment with fuel and lubricants and making minor adjustments and/or replacements as needed while in use, reports any major repairs needed to Maintenance Foreman.
  • Prepares regular reports on hours of operation, quantities of fuel and lubricants consumed, measures of work accomplished, and all related data.
  • Responsible for proper use of equipment, complying with service manual requirements and preventing damage to assigned equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate moving of equipment to minimize loss of time in conjunction with Maintenance Foreman and/or Director of Maintenance.
  • Assists in spraying herbicides to control growth of weeds as needed.
  • Assists in installation and/or repair of turnouts as needed.
  • Must be able to excavate backfill and level earth materials to accomplish work as needed.
  • Responsible for loading earth materials safely into dump trucks for hauling.
  • Responsible for servicing of equipment as per manufacturer or District requirements to ensure preventative maintenance and making minor adjustments and/or replacements as needed while in use. Reports any major repairs needed to immediate Supervisor.
  • Prepares regular reports on preventative maintenance, mileage sheets, and quantities of fuel.
  • Responsible for compliance of safety rules and regulations.
  • Contributes to a team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Responsible for knowing and abiding by all department and District policies and procedures.
  • Attendance during scheduled shift.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
