About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Operator III is a mid-level position within the Public Works department responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment for construction and maintenance projects. Employees in this role work with less supervision and are expected to complete complex tasks safely and efficiently. The position involves performing excavation, grading, hauling, and utility support work for the community. Operators at this level may also train or mentor entry-level operators to build their skills. The role requires the ability to read and follow instructions while coordinating with team members. This position ensures that community infrastructure is well-maintained and supports reliable public works operations.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Four (4) years of heavy equipment operation experience in construction or public works is required.
  • Must have a current and valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • OR Must have successfully completed NCCER Training.
  • An additional Five (5) years of experience and demonstrated proficiency with the relevant heavy equipment may be considered in lieu of NCCER training.

Responsibilities

  • Operates backhoes, loaders, graders, and dump trucks on assigned projects.
  • Drives and maneuvers trucks to transport equipment and materials.
  • Performs excavation and grading for roads and drainage projects.
  • Assists with pipe laying, repairs, and water system maintenance.
  • Locates and avoids underground utilities before excavation work.
  • Provides mentoring and training for less experienced operators.
  • Performs daily inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Responds to service calls and emergency repair needs.
  • Keeps accurate records of daily tasks and equipment use.
  • Coordinates with crew members to complete assigned projects.
  • Ensures safe work zones are established and maintained.
  • Supports installation of hydrants, valves, and other utilities.
  • Completes labor tasks including lifting, shoveling, and cleanup.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisors regarding job progress.
  • Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
