About The Position

The Madison Water Utility is looking for their next Equipment Operator 1. The successful candidate will perform heavy manual labor in the maintenance and repair of the water distribution system. This is routine work in the operation of standard and specialized heavy diesel, gasoline, air, and hydraulically operated equipment and attached mechanical and power equipment. Work is characterized by responsibility for the safe operation of assigned equipment and oversight of employees assigned to operate equipment. Work also includes the performance of heavy manual labor in various maintenance activities. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through personal inspection and observation of compliance with established work schedules and procedures. Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience in the safe operation of heavy trucks, farming equipment, or other heavy machinery.
  • The principles, laws, and ordinances regulating equipment operation.
  • Tools, equipment, methods and materials used in the maintenance and repair of a water distribution system.
  • Relevant safety practices and procedures.
  • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position, including GT Viewer mapping software, and CityWorks work order software.
  • Possession of a valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License.
  • The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process before starting employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator's license within six (6) months of hire.
  • Employees will be required, throughout the term of their employment, to come into work at least 50% of the total number of times the Utility initiates a Call Back to Duty.
  • Employees must know the techniques to lift heavy objects safely such as the ability to lift 20-30 lbs. often and up to 90 lbs. seldomly.
  • Employees will be expected to perform heavy manual work and engage in strenuous activity under all weather conditions and over long periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform heavy manual labor to repair and maintain the water distribution system and set up traffic control equipment.
  • Locate/expose underground utilities using shovels.
  • Operate various tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a water distribution system.
  • Perform hot asphalt patching, concrete flatwork, turf, and landscape restoration.
  • Operate a variety of standard and specialized heavy equipment and attachments for loading, hauling, excavation, plowing, delivery, and other tasks with a variety of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Perform minor servicing and maintenance.
  • Operate single axle, tandem axle, tri-axle dump trucks with equipment trailers.
  • Operate various snow removal and lawn care equipment, trackless vehicle with broom, plow, snowblower and salt-sand spreader attachments, 1-ton pick-up with plow and salt-sand spreader, 5-ton single axle dump truck with salt/sand spreader, 72" & 0 turn lawn mower with sweeper attachment, gas powered mower, leaf blower, and trimmer.
  • Place and use safety equipment and manage traffic at work sites.
  • Clear snow and ice and perform manual field work and non-skilled installation, maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Effectively communicate with members of the public to answer questions and explain interruptions in service.
  • Perform Commercial Driver's License (CDL) checks.
  • Perform vehicle equipment checks.
  • Lead other employees as assigned.
  • Perform related work as required.
