About The Position

The Public Works Operator I is an entry-level position that supports daily operations within the Public Works department. This role focuses on learning the basics of public works functions including construction, maintenance, and repair of community infrastructure. Employees in this position are expected to perform manual labor tasks, operate small tools, and assist crews with larger projects. Work is completed under close supervision with ongoing training to prepare for progression into higher operator roles. The position plays a key part in ensuring community facilities and infrastructure remain safe, reliable, and functional. This is a foundational role designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in public works.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • 0 - 1 years of heavy equipment operation experience in construction or public works is required.
  • Safe use of basic hand tools

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic manual labor duties including digging, lifting, and carrying materials.
  • Assists skilled operators with setup and cleanup of work sites.
  • Learns proper use and care of small hand and power tools.
  • Helps with maintenance of community roads, walkways, and ditches.
  • Supports installation and repair of pipes, hydrants, and other infrastructure.
  • Transports tools and materials to and from assigned work areas.
  • Observes safe work practices and follows crew instructions carefully.
  • Participates in routine inspections of equipment and tools after use.
  • Receives on-the-job training in public works tasks.
  • Assists in cleanup of debris, vegetation, or obstructions from work zones.
  • Provides general support during emergency response efforts when needed.
  • Completes simple recordkeeping or reports under direct guidance.
  • Works alongside experienced staff to gain practical knowledge.
  • Contributes to the overall safety and functionality of community facilities.
  • Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
