About The Position

The Equipment Mechanic I and II positions involve performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work for fleet vehicles and equipment within the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. The roles require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways and bridges, as well as inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Employees at both levels work independently on assignments, but unusual issues are referred to a supervisor.

Requirements

  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain it within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
