About The Position

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" Endorsement or have obtained a Class "A" CDL with "N" Endorsement, within120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Considerable knowledge of Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
  • Considerable knowledge of Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of Automatic and manual shift transmission repair
  • Considerable knowledge of Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Proficient skill in Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Proficient skill in Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
  • Proficient skill in Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Proficient skill in Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
  • Proficient skill in Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Some skill in Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Some skill in Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contractsReading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts
  • Ability to Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingersTalking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
  • Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
  • Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
  • Performs emergency spot repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
  • Trains less experienced technicians.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
