About The Position

The Equipment Mechanic I, II, & III positions involve performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. The role may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways and bridges, as well as inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Employees at this level work independently on assignments, but unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • No degree/diploma required.
  • Equipment Mechanic I - 2 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II - 4 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic III - 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class 'A' CDL within 120 calendar days from course registration.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Trains less experienced technicians (Equipment Mechanic II).
  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required (Equipment Mechanic II).
  • Leads and trains less experienced technicians (Equipment Mechanic III).
  • Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence (Equipment Mechanic III).
