About The Position

This position is responsible for overseeing the inspection, maintenance, and repairs of container, chassis, and flat racks, used for highway transportation and within the terminal operations. This position also manages the daily operation of the Tire Maintenance & Repair department. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience repairing and restructuring equipment, including containers, chassis, and flatracks, with at least two (2) years of supervisory experience of a maintenance crew.
  • Must have prior experience supervising a welding crew or have advanced Stick and MIG welding experience.
  • Must have a strong knowledge of DOT regulation, familiarized with DOT audits and FMCSA Safer compliance programs.
  • Must have prior experience overseeing or possess basic intermodal electrical repair or maintenance.
  • Must have knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance repairs and replacement.
  • Must possess previous work experience in the shipping/transportation industry.
  • Must be able to operate equipment required for repair and maintenance.
  • Must have basic computer skills (Microsoft office).
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and speak intermediate to advanced English and Spanish.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and perform basic math.
  • Must have the ability to work from instructions and technical manuals.
  • Must have the ability to perform and give written and verbal orders.
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions, and make sound decisions.
  • Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours including nights, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and work with mechanical personnel in the repair service and maintenance of containers, chassis, flat racks and other related equipment.
  • Inspect, test, and measure completed work on container, chassis, and flat rack equipment, using devices such as hand tools or gauges to verify conformance to standards or repair requirements.
  • Verify that the Equipment Operators are servicing the mechanics in a timely manner throughout the day.
  • Coordinate Container department work and determine priorities for mechanics by size and class (open top, auto parts, food grade, etc.) to meet operational demand.
  • Coordinate shop work and determine priorities for mechanics, keeping the preventative maintenance program as the main goal.
  • Ensure that the Container and Chassis departments are adequately staffed daily and shifts duties accordingly to cover absences.
  • Coordinate extra assistance staff for other departments and track overtime hours per employee.
  • Coordinate services of mobile mechanics when equipment issues arise offsite.
  • Ensure that the preventive maintenance (PM) program and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) inspections on all chassis or containers are completed on an annual basis.
  • Follow the Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) guidelines as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), to assure the safe operating condition of all chassis, and flat racks.
  • Complete daily inventory of available green-tagged equipment (containers, chassis and flat racks) and report it to the Dispatch department.
  • Assist with the weekly dry container inventory by size and category.
  • Oversees the cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room and other areas of the shop.
  • Respond to container and chassis accidents when needed.
  • Assist with shop related training needs.
  • Requests special orders for parts through catalog ordering and submits requests to replace old or purchase new tools to the Mechanics Manager.
  • Ensure that the information of preventive maintenance performed is entered in the Distribution System Technology (DST) computer database or hand-held computer.
  • Inspect and monitor work areas, examine tools and equipment, and provide employee safety training and weekly safety toolbox meetings to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times by cleaning, organizing, removing safety hazards, oil spills, spare parts, etc. within container chassis/container repair shop operations.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people checking equipment, etc.) at all times.
  • Reconcile employee timecards on a weekly basis to include missing punches, lunch cancellation, overtime approval, floating holidays, etc.
  • Assist in the completion of performance evaluations of mechanic personnel.
  • Perform skilled repair or maintenance operations, using equipment such as hand or power tools, hydraulic presses or shears, or welding equipment.
  • Overhaul, rebuilds and repairs container chassis and containers including but not limited to performing repair, chassis repair, suspension repair and electrical components repair as needed.
  • Operate equipment (9K and 52K forklifts and mule) to move container, flat racks or chassis as needed.
  • Determine reason for part and component failures and replaces or repairs as required.
  • Serve as a back-up to the M&R Manager to oversee the preparation of over-the-road equipment for weekend use.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
