About The Position

As an Equipment Engineer for the Power Conversion System line, you will play a critical role in sustaining and optimizing the equipment that builds Tesla’s next-generation battery packs. The Power Conversion System line integrates complex automation — including KUKA robotics pick-and-place systems, auto fastening, adhesive dispense, leak and Hipot testers, and end-of-line (EOL) validation stations. You will be the first line of technical response for production support, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. This role requires strong mechanical, electrical, and automation fundamentals, a bias for action, and the ability to solve problems quickly in a high-volume, high-reliability manufacturing environment.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical systems, and machine design
  • Experience supporting automated equipment, particularly robotic handling, fastening, dispense, and test stations
  • Familiarity with KUKA robots (preferred), as well as Fanuc or Bdtronic for pick-and-place or adhesive dispense applications
  • Understanding of automation support systems, including conveyors, VFDs, servo actuators, and machine guarding
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical prints
  • Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA) for equipment design and layout development
  • Basic understanding of controls interfaces (PLCs, HMIs, safety interlocks) to collaborate effectively with Controls Engineering
  • Hands-on experience with Hipot, Leak, or Functional Test systems a plus
  • Skilled in use of shop tools, mechanical assembly, and light machining or welding

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day coverage of Power Conversion System production equipment, including robots, conveyors, auto fastening systems, and dispense/validation stations
  • Respond to alarms, breakdowns, and production requests promptly to minimize downtime and ensure continuity
  • Diagnose equipment failures, perform root cause analysis, and document corrective actions
  • Own equipment health and uptime metrics — drive TPM, PM completion, and reliability improvements
  • Develop and maintain Preventive Maintenance (PM) procedures and schedules, ensuring sustainable equipment performance
  • Lead or support major repairs, rebuilds, and retrofits during planned downtime or production breaks
  • Collaborate with Controls, Process, and Test Engineering to address equipment issues, implement design changes, and improve OEE
  • Participate in spare parts strategy and manage component reliability with vendors and maintenance engineering
  • Design and implement equipment reliability improvement projects, focusing on hardware upgrades, improved component design, and operator ergonomics
  • Act as subject matter expert and trainer for assigned equipment, building shift-level technician capability
