About The Position

The Equipment Electrician maintains equipment assigned to the Equipment Department. Individuals in this occupation can be called upon to perform other duties in cases of emergency. Equipment Electrician position may be assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill. This is a journeyman position. After initial orientation and guidance, individuals are expected to perform job duties independently and applicants are expected to fully meet the qualifications listed below, and will be fully responsible for the correct completion of the work assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • The Equipment Electrician must be a high school graduate and have certification of completion of additional vocational/technical training as an electrician.
  • Ten (10) years of continuous work experience as a journeyman electrician can substitute for the vocational training requirement.
  • This position requires four (4) years of experience as an electrician maintaining, repairing and overhauling electrically propelled rail transit vehicles or similar equipment in an industrial environment.
  • Individual must be able to successfully pass an examination, which tests comprehension of electrical theory.
  • This position requires knowledge of the correct and safe use of the full complement of industrial hand and power tools, measuring devices, gauges, test instruments and material handling equipment needed for maintenance work.
  • This position requires the incumbent to use power cleaning, abrasive cleaning and painting equipment.
  • This position requires the incumbent to use car hoisting equipment.
  • Use of heating equipment may be required to assemble and disassemble components.
  • This position requires the incumbent to use electrical diagnostic instruments.
  • Incumbent for this position will be trained before using specialized equipment.
  • Incumbent must have a current, valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and a background check.
  • Must be able to pass a proficiency examination that addresses all of the required knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance, routine inspection, periodical inspection, diagnoses electrical equipment and makes appropriate repairs.
  • Performs inbound/outbound traction motor inspections and periodic maintenance including cleaning of motors, electrical Isolation testing and brush replacement.
  • Inspect, maintain and cleans 37.5vdc battery sets and auxiliary power supply units.
  • Inspects, crimps/solders/brazes and replaces 600VDC power cables, ground cables, and fuses.
  • Performs on-car modifications which include point-to-point wiring and use of crimping tools.
  • The individual for this position assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
