About The Position

Perform and oversee a combination of advanced skilled equipment repairs and preventative tasks in an equipment shop environment. Provide technical and directional guidance to floor technicians in conjunction with the shop supervisor. How you will contribute: Provide guidance and leadership to floor technician: Assist shop supervisor by organizing work flow and shop productivity through management of on-road technicians. Manage out-sourced work with dealers and contractors. Identify the contractors and vendors, handle the procurements and ensure work is acceptable in terms of quality and strict deadlines to complete the projects. Lead Preventative Maintenance monitoring, scheduling and follow-up on repeat repairs to identify why vehicle came back and what needs to be done to correct the issues. Serve as Lead Technician or Acting Supervisor: May act as lead technician or shop supervisor to fill in as needed during the absence of the shop supervisor and as assigned by the District Equipment Manager. Provide technical guidance to lower level technicians. Participate, function and promote team environment. Technical expertise: Identify, diagnose and repair all types of deficiencies on state-owned equipment and vehicles, including gasoline, diesel, and propane engines; manual, automatic, hydrostatic, and power shift transmissions; computerized central hydraulic systems, engine computers, body control modules, electronic ignition, and fuel injection systems; air conditioning; hydraulic, electric, and air brake systems; steering, suspension, electrical wiring, and engine cooling systems. Use electronic and computerized testing equipment to diagnose, service and repair complex and specialized mechanical, hydraulic and electronic components of highway maintenance equipment and vehicles. Forecast and meet timeframes on repairs. Repair, rebuild, or replace major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, final drives, transfer cases, and trans-axles. Perform preventative maintenance and state inspection on vehicles. Maintain records. Welding, Fabrication and Special Repairs: Design, fabricate, modify and weld components and perform advanced specialized hydraulic repairs. Perform heating, cutting, welding and fabrication of components and perform advanced level specialized hydraulic repairs as needed to repair equipment.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain VA State Inspection License within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter
  • Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
  • Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, operate various types of equipment, and provide technical guidance to others
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical repair manuals, schematics, perform mathematical calculations, read gauges and testing devices
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to work with electronic diagnostic equipment and computer-based technical reference materials
  • Advanced ability to diagnose, repair and perform preventive maintenance on all types of state-owned equipment
  • Considerable skill in using computerized diagnostic shop equipment and working with electronic components
  • Knowledge of general shop practices
  • Knowledge of the functionality of complex vehicle components
  • Skill in using traditional hand and power tools
  • Skill in welding and fabricating equipment components
  • Skilled in using computers and maintaining accurate records and reports

  • Advanced skill and proficiency in diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance on all types of highway maintenance equipment and vehicles
  • Certification in ASE L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialists – Light Duty or ASE L2 Electronic Diesel Diagnosis Specialists-Heavy Duty
  • Certification in ASE Master Automobile or ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck
  • Certification in AWS Welding Mild Steel certification for Stick and MIG or IFPS Certified Mobile Hydraulics Mechanic
  • Considerable skill in using computerized diagnostic shop equipment and working with electronic components
  • Knowledge of proper hazardous waste disposal, OSHA, VOSH regulations, and general shop safety practices
  • Safety shoes required
  • Valid driver's license
