About The Position

The Equestrian Activity Specialists work alongside the Equestrian Team, they serve work to further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of equestrian programs at camp that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. They support the physical operation of program facilities and equipment. Depending on specialty, additional training would be provided onsite. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serves girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Current certification in horseback riding or equivalent. Mounting and dismounting campers and/or yourself on a 16.2 hand horse with no assistance.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Documented experience in teaching and facilitating activities to children relating to area of specialty.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
  • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend pre-camp training.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan and background check

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experienced teaching or interacting in youth programming
  • Prior experience teaching horseback riding, leading trail rides, or managing horses in a camp or stable setting.
  • Strong knowledge of horse care, grooming, tacking, and basic health and safety practices.
  • Experience working with youth in a camp, school, or recreational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver an equestrian program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
  • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
  • Deliver progressive and varied activities that use resources efficiently.
  • Evaluate the success of the activity.
  • Be available and on-call during scheduled weekends in the summer season to feed and care for horses when campers are off-site or when programs are not in session
  • Be present and actively engaged with campers at the equestrian center and throughout camp to help foster the magic and spirit of the camp experience.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures of our GSGLA policies and horse rental.
  • Assist counselors with the development of activity kits for use by units and for special events.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in activity area.
  • Maintain and clean activity equipment and activity area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
  • Ensure that equipment and supplies are secure.
  • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Attend and prepare for daily meetings, on time.
  • Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.
  • Be a village liaison, providing check in/out support, conduct daily visits to villages and provide outstanding customer service to families.
  • Engaging with campers at mealtimes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
