About The Position

The Equal Opportunity Specialist 1 (Language Access) at the NYS Department of Labor is responsible for ensuring customer access to programs and services while maintaining compliance with diversity, inclusion, and language access regulations. This role requires strong leadership and problem-solving skills to enhance service delivery and improve processes. The specialist will manage translation and interpretation services, coordinate with various stakeholders, and support the development of language access policies.

Requirements

  • Six years of experience in equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion, or human rights.
  • Experience with translation and interpretation services best practices.
  • Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to reasonable accommodations and language access.
  • Experience with program/project management tools and recordkeeping skills.
  • Expertise in information systems and technology for language access services.
  • Bilingual in English and at least one other language (Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, or Mandarin).
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with program/project management tools and recordkeeping skills.
  • Bilingual in English and at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, or Mandarin.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the provision of translation and interpreter services for the general public.
  • Coordinate telephonic, virtual, and onsite interpreter services.
  • Participate in the procurement and administration of contracts with translation and interpreter service vendors.
  • Identify and prioritize translation of critical online and print materials necessary for access to NYSDOL programs.
  • Monitor translation product quality and ensure compliance standards are maintained.
  • Provide suggestions to optimize translation service workflows.
  • Develop and implement language access policies and procedures compliant with federal and state law.
  • Track interpretation and translation services and costs.
  • Collaborate with partners to coordinate translation and quality assurance of materials.
  • Assist in training new employees and community partners about language services.
  • Support and collaborate with others to achieve program objectives.
  • Analyze data and produce reports related to diversity and inclusion programs.
