About The Position

The Epidemiologist position involves conducting epidemiological surveillance across various health domains, including communicable and chronic diseases, reproductive health, and child health. The role requires data compilation, analysis, and interpretation to inform community health initiatives and disease control activities. The Epidemiologist will work under general supervision, collaborating with the Epidemiology Program Manager and other health department staff to develop strategies for disease prevention and control.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Masters of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology or its equivalent.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience working in a public health agency, preferably in communicable disease and/or epidemiology.
  • Experience in health care or health research is desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license.

  • Experience in communicable disease and/or epidemiology preferred.
  • Additional experience in health care or health research desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, compiles, analyzes and evaluates data to assess the health status of the population and specific demographic groups.
  • Selects appropriate methods of statistical and quantitative analysis to identify variables linked to disease incidence.
  • Develops epidemiological assessments and applies principles to disease control activities, including outbreak situations.
  • Maintains epidemiological databases for the Health Department.
  • Interacts with the Epidemiology Program Manager to provide disease updates and obtain direction for disease investigation and control activities.
  • Conducts disease control activities related to food borne and zoonotic illnesses, and chronic diseases such as asthma.
  • Participates in developing programs and strategies to prevent communicable and chronic diseases.
  • Prepares reports for the Michigan Department of Community Health using local data and ensures timely reporting to the State.
  • Develops educational materials for at-risk and general audiences regarding acute and chronic diseases.
  • Promotes evidence-based interventions and shares findings with practitioners and community stakeholders.
  • Provides liaison and staff support to various committees and community groups.
