About The Position

The Epidemiologist and Surveillance Coordinator supports the Sedgwick County Health Department by investigating and monitoring over 50 notifiable diseases to control spread and protect public health. Responsibilities include monitoring and reporting disease and surveillance data, conducting investigations, providing infectious disease expertise, and planning studies to prevent or control diseases, injuries, or conditions. The role involves interacting with individuals affected by disease who may be emotionally charged, and may require field deployment as a responder or leader during public health emergencies.

This position may be filled at the Epidemiologist I or Epidemiologist II level depending on qualifications and experience.

Requirements

• Epidemiologist I: One (1) year of experience in epidemiology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Epidemiologist II: Two (2) years of experience as an epidemiologist or in a similar position in a public health department or healthcare setting, including one (1) year of experience conducting reportable disease investigations. One (1) year of experience in data management and/or data analysis.
• Both Levels: Master’s degree in public health, biological science, medical science, health science, or related field that includes at least nine (9) graduate credit hours in epidemiological methods; or twelve (12) graduate credit hours or six (6) months of work experience in data management and/or data analysis. Two (2) years of experience working with Microsoft Office Suite or similar systems. Valid U.S. driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700 courses within 30 days of employment. Additional trainings may be required.

Nice To Haves

• Epidemiologist I: Two (2) years of experience working in a public health department or healthcare setting. One (1) year of experience in data management and/or data analysis.
• Epidemiologist II: Three (3) years of experience working in a public health department or healthcare setting.
• Both Levels: Experience with SAS, SPSS, or other database/statistical software. Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Epidemiology or at least nine (9) graduate credit hours in epidemiological and statistical methods from an accredited college or university. Three (3) credit hours of coursework or six (6) months of work experience related to infectious disease or public health surveillance.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, analyze, and report on disease data to improve the health of the community
• Analyze disease investigation and surveillance data, prepare supervisor-reviewed reports, and support projects and Health Department action plans, including arboviral disease control and influenza surveillance, to monitor, prevent, and control diseases, injuries, and conditions.
• Conduct disease investigations per established state and local guidelines
• Conduct timely, thorough investigations of notifiable disease reports, including phone and on-site investigations of homes, businesses, and facilities by interviewing patients and contacts, identifying sources and related cases, accurately documenting findings, and supporting outbreak investigations and inspections of properties of health concern.
• Educate and collaborate with health partners to control the spread of disease.
• Build and maintain partnerships with health organizations, provide research- and regulation-based technical assistance, support Public Health Emergency Preparedness, assist in creating educational materials and training, participate in boards or coalitions, and maintain expertise through ongoing professional development.
