About The Position

The Epidemiologist Sr position at the Virginia Department of Health involves leading and coordinating epidemiological activities within the Community Health Epidemiology Unit. The role focuses on data analysis, program evaluation, and providing technical support to health regions, ensuring effective data collection and interpretation to inform public health decisions.

Requirements

• Considerable experience in public health, social science, epidemiology, or biostatistics or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
• Considerable knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment & prevention of diseases and conditions of public health importance.
• Considerable knowledge of methods of public health surveillance.
• Experience with biostatistics, analysis & interpretation of data, and data management techniques.
• Working knowledge of statistical software packages (SAS, R, or STATA) and graphical software (ArcGIS or Tableau).
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to collect, quality assure, analyze, interpret, & present statistical data.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with health care professionals and the general public.

• Demonstrated ability to lead & direct the work of others either in a supervisory or project management capacity.

Responsibilities

• Carry out investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities within the Community Health Epidemiology Unit.
• Serve as a liaison to an assigned Health Region for technical, epidemiologic, and statistical analyses.
• Coordinate qualitative and quantitative data support with district-level Community Health Epidemiologists.
• Improve data collection efforts for hard-to-reach populations.
• Interpret program policies and procedures, providing training and support.
• Monitor and review data collection and analysis methods for accuracy and consistency.
• Facilitate bidirectional data flows between Local Health Districts and Central Office.
