About The Position

i3 is seeking a EO/IR Systems Engineer to join our team. This is a hands-on, end-to-end role that applies first-principles thinking to design optical sensors, model sensor performance, and support the integration of those designs into real-world hardware. The candidate will define test strategies, assist in building test infrastructure, and validate systems under realistic conditions. The candidate will advise on the technical direction and then develop it for a rapidly evolving, low-cost, novel system. This position is contingent upon funding.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree with 6 years of related experience preferred. Additional years of experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Experience designing, developing, and integrating optical sensing systems that directly shape seeker and sensor performance.
  • Engineering experience with EO/IR Tracking Systems and sensor fusion.
  • Ability to perform line of sight and other performance analyses of optical payload systems.
  • Understanding of EO/IR Error Factors and allocation of EO/IR Error Budget.
  • Experience with requirements decomposition and allocation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Knowledge of office administration and procedures.

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and client service skills; ability to clearly communicate in discussions and written documents, and to deliver feedback clearly and tactfully.

Nice To Haves

  • Solid foundation in optics, imaging systems, and sensor physics.
  • Familiarity with opto-mechanical packaging, including alignment, lens mounting, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with HWIL simulator with radar/EO/IR models
  • Proficiency with modeling and analysis tools such as Matlab, Python, MODTRAN.
  • Active Secret Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Drive system-level architecture and component trade studies, including buying decisions.
  • Perform and develop tooling for first principles calculations to inform design decisions and predict performance.
  • Model optical systems and sensor behavior using industry-standard modeling software packages.
  • Work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
  • Create and present internal technical documentation that clearly conveys design intent, adherence to standards, requirements, and specifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
