About The Position

The Active Optical Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory is at the forefront of developing and deploying cutting-edge optical sensor systems that serve multiple mission areas of national significance. Our group has a rich history of innovation, having successfully fielded a high-area coverage foliage-penetrating 3D imaging lidar system utilizing single photon-sensitive detector arrays. We have also pioneered a novel ultra-wideband coherent lidar and leveraged MIT LL's digital pixel focal plane array technology to create unique passive infrared (IR) sensors. Over the past decade, our team has demonstrated exceptional creativity, resulting in 25 technology disclosures and 12 patents, alongside multiple R&D 100 Awards that recognize revolutionary advancements in science and technology. Our portfolio encompasses a range of projects, from high-risk, high-reward seedling studies that explore novel techniques and technologies to the development and integration of larger, mature systems onto platforms such as aircraft. We pride ourselves on our world-class expertise in optical phenomenology, optical sensors, high-speed embedded processing, and data exploitation and visualization algorithms. We are a diverse and dedicated group seeking exceptional candidates to contribute to the next generation of optical sensors. We are currently looking for a highly motivated individual with a robust background in experimental optics, complemented by skills in data analysis and modeling. The successful candidate will engage in all facets of technology development, including design, modeling, laboratory testing, integration, field collection, and data analysis. This role is critical in advancing our capabilities in EO/IR systems, and the individual will be expected to collaborate closely with team members to drive innovation and excellence in our projects.
