About The Position

Under the direction of an assigned Public Health Services Manager, conducts complex and specialized environmental health inspections, plan reviews, surveillance, sample collections, investigations, field tests, soil, site and facility evaluations, regulatory compliance and enforcement activities in any or all of the following program areas: waste management, water quality, air quality, food protection, land use, recreation, shelter, vector control, hazardous substances, institutional environmental health and safety, and the identification, prevention and control of environmental health hazards, nuisances and sources of illness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Four (4) years of environmental health experience in a public health agency
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel
  • Knowledge of: Environmental health principles and practices Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other technology applications
  • Skill in: Organizational ability and initiative Written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to: Direct and organize the work of others Handle conflict in a diplomatic manner Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, Administrators, Department Heads, staff, union officials and the public Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other professionals and the public Work in an environment which embraces the county’s Dignity Campaign Effectively speak, write and understand the English language Effectively speak, write and understand a language other than English is preferred Understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries Work independently

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Sanitarian Registration or Professional Engineer License
  • Effectively speak, write and understand a language other than English is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the planning, coordination and implementation of activities, programs and regulatory actions.
  • Assists in planning, scheduling, coordinating and prioritizing work assignments.
  • Prepares and maintains activity records, reports, notices and correspondence in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Provides office and field consultative assistance and support services to staff.
  • Assumes the team leadership role in the absence of the Environmental Health Supervisor or as directed.
  • Recommends, authorizes and issues permits, licenses, approvals and/or certifications.
  • Provides technical, consultative and related environmental health educational services to individuals, agencies and the public.
  • Participates in staff development and training programs.
  • Prepares and disseminates educational and informational materials.
  • Works with clients to assess their needs, provide information or assistance; and resolves problems.
  • Issues citations and attends hearings for compliance violations.
  • Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
