About The Position

This is a temporary position with the Department of Environmental Quality, located at 3441 Arendell Street, Morehead City - Carteret County. The role involves working on various phases of estuarine bottom habitat mapping and shellfish abundance surveys within the state’s estuaries for both the Bottom Mapping Program and the Shellfish Lease Program. The Shellfish Lease Program permits the use of qualifying public trust waters to culture and grow molluscan shellfish for commercial production. This position offers exposure to an agency's culture, process, procedures, and potential learning opportunities, which can provide valuable experience for those seeking permanent employment with the state.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Regularly lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Working in an outdoor environment

  • Knowledge of identifying shellfish and SAV
  • Skill in sampling shellfish and SAV densities

Responsibilities

  • Delineating and mapping bottom type using GPS and related GPS data processing software
  • Identifying shellfish and SAV
  • Sampling shellfish and SAV densities
  • Collecting, analyzing, recording, coding, and verifying biological data for computer entry
  • Operating sampling boats, trailer, and equipment
  • Maintaining and repairing sampling boats, trailers, and equipment
  • Conducting shellfish lease site investigations and administration of proposed shellfish leases
  • Mapping bivalve and SAV habitat and verifying marking of shellfish leases
  • Performing field sampling
  • Participating in other Division programs such as Shellfish Rehabilitation and Oyster Disease programs
