This includes audits, inspections, calculations, and documentation regarding Blacksburg Utilities CO-OP’s boiler, generator, and compressor operations. This position requires having the “D” level SC Biological Wastewater Operator Certification within two years of hire date.  Support for exam preparation will be provided by the Blacksburg Utility CO-OP team. Certification includes a state-issued multiple-choice exam.  This position requires the pursuit of the “A” level SC Biological Wastewater Operator Certification. Applicants should have previous manufacturing, equipment and operations experience. Applicants should be available, flexible, eager learners and excellent teammates. This job includes the following general items: 4 team, 12-hr rotating shifts. Total of 15 days ON / 13 days OFF every 28 days after training is completed. Ability to work safely and understand/follow site safety requirements. Ability to work weekends. Ability to work overtime. Work in an outside, office, and utilities environment. Conduct daily readings. Conduct water treatment tests. Operate boilers, turbines, air compressors, and air dryers. Participation in daily team maintenance. Maintain environmental compliance. Housekeeping.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience using MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Computer skills are sufficient to enter information into databases and spreadsheets, manipulate data and perform calculations using excel, and type up reports; use email; open, save, close, create files; and navigate through different computer programs and control systems.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion (<10% of the role).
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to create and review written procedures.
  • Math skills including algebra; calculations of area, volume, and concentration; unit conversations; and problem solving.
  • Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and within time constraints.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple responsibilities.
  • A positive attitude.
  • Ability to be flexible, learn new things, and adapt to change; ability to learn things independently.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Equipment and process trouble shooting.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous boiler experience.
  • Previous wastewater or water treatment experience.
  • Previous mechanical maintenance experience.
  • Experience with distributed control systems (DCS) and data trending.
  • Basic understanding of pumps, mixers, pH, sampling techniques, chemical feed systems, and lab equipment.
  • 2- or 4- year college degree in chemistry, environmental, or other related fields.
