Ames Laboratory is seeking candidates for the position of Environmental Systems Mechanic I within Facilities and Engineering Services. This position maintains and troubleshoots HVAC systems. Performs work in the repair, service, and maintenance of Laboratory buildings, mechanical equipment and other facilities systems. The duties of this position require the ability to lift, carry and/or move 50-100 lbs. occasionally, and 25-50 lbs. frequently. Frequent bending, squatting, and stooping is also required. The ability to attend required courses regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), wear and maintain PPE, and fully adhere to the requirements set forth in the Personal Protective Equipment Program are required by the duties of this position. The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively with staff, scientists, students, and the public in order to provide excellent customer service. Must have knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and gas powered equipment and possess an ability to be trained on new equipment and the ability to apply training to new equipment. Must have a strong mechanical aptitude. Ability to read and understand equipment schematics, diagrams and manuals. This job warrants knowledge of several different skilled trades. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience in refrigeration, heating or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship
  • Obtains refrigeration certificate of at least type 2 within first six months of employment.
  • May need to possess a valid driver’s license and meet University’s Fleet Safety Program.
  • The duties of this position require the ability to lift, carry and/or move 50-100 lbs. occasionally, and 25-50 lbs. frequently. Frequent bending, squatting, and stooping is also required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the service, repair, maintenance, and testing of steam, hot water heat, RO/DI water systems, pumps, and HVAC equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reading system schematics, blueprint development, and electrical principles.
  • Experience with repair and installation of plumbing fixtures, water distribution systems, and sewer systems.
  • Demonstrated construction and mechanical knowledge to support repairs in other trades.
