About The Position

Summary The Environmental Specialist – Waste Management is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the Don Plant’s waste management compliance program and ensuring all applicable compliance requirements are satisfied. Ideal candidates will have a strong industrial RCRA compliance background with a focus on continuous improvement and cost efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in RCRA specifically related to waste characterization, waste handling, and waste shipping.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or chemical processing environment.
  • Experience in report generation and quality control methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and manage projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Goal oriented in setting and achieving goals.
  • Must be willing to participate in the department on-call rotation (approximately 8 weekends per year).
  • Must be willing to train/work with support staff on proper waste management.
  • Must be able to show initiative and be a ‘self-starter’ to achieve working goals.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in hazardous waste operations (HAZWOPER), asbestos management, or related credentials preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship throughout the individuals work in the facility.
  • Ensure facility compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act), and applicable asbestos management regulations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inspections, audits, and regulatory inquiries related to the facility waste programs.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage all waste handling operations including general waste, industrial waste, hazardous waste, asbestos, and recycling programs.
  • Oversee the characterization, profiling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non‑hazardous waste.
  • Maintain accurate waste records, manifests, sampling documentation, and regulatory reports.
  • Monitor program performance metrics and generate operational, compliance, and cost‑tracking reports.
  • Provide training and direction for facility staff and/or contractors supporting waste handling activities.
  • Implement and update procedures for safe and compliant waste handling, storage, and disposal.
  • Identify opportunities to improve waste handling efficiency, reduce disposal costs, and enhance recycling and waste minimization programs.
  • Develop and execute sustainability initiatives focused on waste diversion, resource recovery, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead the waste minimization committee.
