About The Position

This position works under general supervision and requires considerable knowledge of science field in order to assist in development and implementation of comprehensive local solid waste management programs, which includes reviewing applications for recycling, litter prevention and waste reduction. Develops and implements recycling, composting, waste management and energy saving practices Completes assessment of all areas for energy and water savings opportunities Researches and evaluates projects and programs for development and implementation of transportation projects Collects and analyzes data and compiles reports Researches and ensures compliance with local, state and federal law and local ordinances Oversees reclaimers and pulpers Identifies waste reduction, recycling and upcycling opportunities Collects and removes institution waste Ensures full sort of waste Collects, cleans, sorts, bails and transports waste and recyclables Travels to recycling centers Collects and distributes food waste and organics Performs stages of compost preparation, including proper mixture of materials, monitoring of pile temperature, timely turning and watering of product and sampling of final product Oversees compost and dehydrating equipment Oversees recycling apprenticeship program Works on sustainability projects and committees Maintains sustainability records and enters data in assigned platform Works in collaboration with staff to complete the Annual Sustainably Audit Chairs institution Green Team Assists with offender sustainability programing Works in collaboration with staff to maintain criteria for LEED & WELL buildings Monitors underground storage tanks, conducts testing of domestic water supply and serves as contact for OEPA, ODNR, wetland, woodland and additional land use projects. Issues and monitors materials and tools escorts offenders, screens and hires offenders Completes inmate performance evaluations Completes month end apprenticeship paperwork Assists institution with grounds upkeep and clean up, including snow removal Operates equipment including but not limited to gator, skid steer and tractor Recommends and prepares requests for appropriate equipment and supplies

Requirements

  • 3 yrs. trg. or 3 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology, hydrogeology, earth science &/or urban & regional planning &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics &/or history &/or archaeology (i.e., latter two subject areas pertain to positions only in Department of Transportation) which included responsibility for determining environmental & economic effects of environmental pollution or inspecting proposed & existing industrial water pollution pre-treatment &/or abandoned industrial facilities to determine existence of public health &/or pollution problems &/or other facility or site inspections & investigations to determine compliance with state &/or federal environmental control regulations. Training &/or experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • completion of undergraduate core program in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science field or mathematics, history or archaeology with education commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • For all positions engaged in field work, applicants must be able to provide own transportation.
  • New employees in EPA's solid waste program, excluding those in the solid waste planning unit, must obtain a sanitarian-in-training certificate during their probationary period.
