About The Position
Environmental Specialists uphold and promote the Department's environmental ethic by ensuring that projects are designed in an environmentally sound manner and comply with the numerous federal and state environmental regulations and/or agreements that apply to the Department's work. Environmental Specialists work as part of a project team with NYSDOT Design, Construction, and Maintenance staff as well as various public and private agencies, to resolve environmental issues. The Environmental Specialist 1 (ES1) duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Review and analyze small and large-scale transportation projects for environmental implications and coordination/permitting needs. The environmental topics routinely encountered include, but are not limited to, cultural resources, endangered species, wetlands, streams, asbestos, and contaminated materials. Prepare project level correspondence and reports for project documentation and coordination/permitting with involved regulatory agencies. Collect field data for wetland, stream, and/or endangered species coordination and/or permitting. Assist with post-construction monitoring of wetland mitigation sites. Due to the field work component of this position, at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required. Utilize GIS and other available software to conduct environmental analysis. Assist in the review of Locally Administered Federal Aid projects for compliance with Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Assist in the review of Highway Work Permits. Attend public meetings as needed. These meetings usually occur in the evening.
