About The Position

Howard University Hospital (HUH) seeks an Environmental Specialist to provide environmental and janitorial services throughout the Hospital complex. This role helps maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for patients, visitors, and staff by following established cleaning standards, safety procedures, and infection prevention practices. Union: Local 2094 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: One (1) year of environmental or janitorial work experience, preferably in a healthcare facility.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions, bloodborne pathogen procedures, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when cleaning patient care areas.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and use sound judgment in completing detailed work.
  • Ability to successfully operate a variety of cleaning equipment (as assigned) and maintain equipment in safe working order.
  • Professionalism and strong customer service skills when interacting with patients, guests, and coworkers.
  • Problem-solving skills and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Time management skills and ability to perform multiple tasks within defined timeframes.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning of internal Hospital areas including patient rooms, nursing units, offices, clinical areas, waiting areas, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, and stairwells to maintain a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Replenish or replace expendable supplies such as soap, toilet tissue, and paper towels.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment (as assigned) such as buffers (high/low speed), automatic scrubbers, pressure washers, vacuum cleaners, shampooers/extractors, burnishers, steam machines, baseboard machines, and restroom cleaning machines.
  • Empty trash containers, replace liners, and clean the exterior of trash containers.
  • Transport trash and hazardous waste to appropriate disposal areas in accordance with Hospital policies and safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety precautions and procedures when performing work and using equipment and cleaning supplies; identify and report safety hazards and needed repairs to the appropriate designee.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA and compliance requirements; participate in required training and performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
