About the position

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Environmental Scientist/Biologist for employment in the Miami, FL office. This position would support numerous natural resource projects in the South Florida region with a focus on wetland and wildlife biology, marine resources, and transportation planning. Primary duties include preparation of biological impact assessments, NEPA documents, and permit applications for a variety of projects for local transportation agencies and other federal, state, and local clients. The candidate will be required to work primarily in a client-facing office setting with the ability to manage multiple tasks, analyze biological impacts for wildlife, plants, and/or habitats, and prepare technical reports to support deliverables. Additional duties may include assisting with listed species or natural resources related field surveys.

Responsibilities

  • Use strong written and verbal communication skills to serve as client-facing liaison
  • Work in the client office to serve as a cross-disciplinary resource and support day-to-day client activities
  • Identify potential environmental impacts through reviews of engineering plans, aerials, and GIS databases
  • Prepare client deliverables including reports for natural community evaluations, environmental permitting, botanical surveys, wildlife assessments, environmental assessments, environmental impact, biological assessments, mitigation plans and monitoring
  • Support biological surveys fieldwork as part of a team. Identify and record fauna and/or flora in the field (terrestrial and coastal)
  • Utilize electronic data collection methods and manage data
  • Work under supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member or independently
  • Ensure assigned tasks stay on schedule and are completed within allocated budget

Requirements

  • BS or BA Degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or other closely related discipline
  • 2+ Years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Knowledge of state and federal agency environmental regulations
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review
  • US Citizenship required due to the nature of work

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with a variety of South Florida natural resources, flora, and fauna (marine and terrestrial)
  • Experience with protocols for wildlife surveys, special-status plant surveys, and/or habitat assessments
  • Experience conducting general species surveys and/or experience conducting botany surveys, marine surveys, and vegetation characterization and mapping
  • Experience with environmental permitting and NEPA assessments
  • Experience with ArcGIS
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations
  • Proficiency with processing and interpreting data for evaluating biological impacts
  • Prior consulting experience preferred
  • Desire to assist AECOM in the continued growth of the South Florida ecological practice
  • Scuba diving experience (Certified)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment with changing client priorities
  • Flexibility and willingness to support multiple projects, as needed
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; be innovative and creative problem solver
  • Ability to create and maintain tracking spreadsheets and documents
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Master's Degree is preferable
