About The Position

WGI is seeking an Environmental Scientist with 0 - 5 years of professional experience to join their Environmental Services department in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, FL. This entry-level position involves serving as an “In-House” consultant, assisting senior staff with technical support and local, state, and federal regulatory permitting for transportation projects in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, specifically for a districtwide contract with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) – District 6. The role offers a mix of office and field work and a diversity of project types. The Environmental Scientist will work under the direction of senior-level environmental professionals with expertise in wetland and upland permitting, and protected species management. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Ability to identify Florida trees and wetland plants
  • Must be able to collect data in hot and difficult field conditions including remote and swampy places
  • Excellent technical writing skills and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of threatened and endangered species that occur in Florida is a plus
  • Experience with GIS or AutoCAD is a plus
  • Knowledge of Florida and federal permitting rules is a plus
  • PADI or NAUI certifications preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with transportation projects by coordinating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, planners, and surveyors
  • Collect field data such as soil and groundwater sampling, tree surveys, wetland assessments, protected species surveys, and gopher tortoise relocation
  • Conducting benthic resource surveys (seagrasses and corals)
  • Analyze data, prepare graphics, write technical reports, and prepare environmental permit applications
  • other responsibilites as assigned by the manager
