About The Position

SCS Engineers is looking for a summer 2026 intern for our Des Moines, Iowa office. This opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience in both technical solid waste and recycling concepts, as well as consulting services through a diverse range of client projects, while giving you the chance to explore the beginnings of your own career path. This internship will offer exposure to multiple stakeholders as our team works with a variety of clients, including jurisdictions, haulers, and other private sector entities. As an intern, you’ll work alongside experienced professionals on projects centered around recycling, compost, and organics management, providing technical assistance to businesses, solid waste legislation and policy implementation, and sustainability projects. You will typically work 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science, environmental studies or related field and graduating by June 2028 required.
  • Must be willing to live in the Des Moines area for Summer 2026 (housing will not be provided).
  • A valid driver’s license with a driving record in good standing required.
  • Solid technical and computer skills.
  • Ability to travel overnight for work outside of an office setting may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with waste and recycling audits and characterization studies to assess the success or needs of diversion programs.
  • Assessing client solid waste management programs, policies, and facilities to help identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assisting with the design and implementation of diversion programs.
  • Assisting with facility compliance activities (i.e., permit development, permit renewal, operational reports, facility inspections, etc.).
  • Preparing data validation and calculations for reports and in support of client compliance.
  • Compiling data for and preparing a variety of reports, studies, and presentations for decision-making purposes as required by the client and regulatory agencies.
  • Developing and maintaining a working knowledge of relevant regulations and requirements.
  • Creating and collecting survey data as needed by clients.
  • Performing and documenting field observations of various operations.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of outreach and education materials.
  • Supporting sustainable materials management projects.
  • Writing and preparing reports.
