About The Position

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Air (BOA), is seeking a motivated Environmental Protection Engineer I to join the Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) Construction Unit C. This entry‑level engineering role offers hands‑on training and experience in reviewing air permit applications for a wide range of operations and air pollution control systems. The selected candidate will also support BOA staff in conducting investigations, inspections, and monitoring activities for facilities regulated under the CAAPP Construction program. This position provides an excellent opportunity to build foundational engineering and regulatory skills while contributing to the protection of air quality in Illinois. Requirements

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of coursework associated with environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic and hydrology specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electrical, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty.
Requires no previous experience.
This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.
Requires current and valid driver’s license.
Requires the ability to travel.
Requires the ability to pass a named-based background check.

Responsibilities

Receives training and guidance in the review and analysis of permit applications in the Bureau of Air (BOA)/Air Pollution Control (APC), Permit Section, Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) Construction Unit – Unit C.
Receives training and guidance in the utilization of the Permit Section data systems.
Participates in discussions and observes higher level staff in the development of permit applications and their related information.
Receives training and guidance from higher level staff in permit fee resolution.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties.
