About The Position

The State of Montana is seeking an Environmental Project Officer to join the Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Program within the Waste Management & Remediation Division. The Montana AML Program is tasked with monitoring and reclaiming abandoned coal mines, hard rock mines, and coal seam fires across the state. This role involves providing project management for the investigation, evaluation, and cleanup of abandoned mine lands. Environmental Project Officers administer reclamation projects funded by federal grants, ensuring environmental protection through the application of federal and state environmental laws and regulations. Key responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and directing interdisciplinary technical studies, evaluating project alternatives, and managing projects from inception to completion while maintaining state and federal compliance. The position also involves reviewing project and technical documents for regulatory compliance, assisting in selecting appropriate and cost-effective remedies, and acting as a liaison to the public and various stakeholder groups. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physical, biological, environmental, or earth science or engineering
  • Current valid Driver's License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is required upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Provide project management for the investigation, evaluation, and eventual abandoned mine land cleanup
  • Administer abandoned mine reclamation projects funded by federal grants
  • Ensure protection of Montana's environment through application and knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and regulations
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct interdisciplinary technical studies
  • Evaluate project alternatives relative to applicable environmental laws
  • Manage projects from start to completion while ensuring state and federal compliance
  • Review all project and technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Aid in the selection of technically appropriate, cost-effective remedies to preserve and protect the State of Montana's interests and obligations at a particular site
  • Act as a liaison to the public and coordinate with various stakeholder groups
