About The Position

The Environmental Programs Specialist III is responsible for conducting stream monitoring programs that involve chemical, physical, and biological assessments, as well as educational outreach. This role requires significant fieldwork, often performed independently, and entails maintaining accurate records, coordinating monitoring activities, and managing monitoring equipment. The position is supervised by the Monitoring Coordinator and may involve travel across the state, including overnight trips.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in a physical, natural, or biological science, chemistry, hydrology, or environmental science.
  • Knowledge of water quality with an environmental/biological context.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and make sound decisions in the moment.
  • Knowledge of stream water quality monitoring procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in a similar field is a plus.
  • Experience with laboratory procedures and quality assurance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct physical, chemical, and biological monitoring of streams according to agency standard operating procedures.
  • Collect, handle, and identify a variety of aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms, including field identification of fish species.
  • Follow Quality Assurance/Quality Control plans to conduct sample collections and maintain accurate records of fieldwork.
  • Transfer samples to analytical laboratories and data to records manager in accordance with quality assurance protocols.
  • Operate and maintain monitoring equipment and analytical instrumentation to collect precise information.
  • Plan sampling schedules in coordination with Monitoring Coordinator and colleagues.
  • Interact with landowners and citizens in a professional manner.
  • Represent the Water Quality Division at public and private meetings.
  • Participate in educational events to communicate technical knowledge to the layperson.
