About The Position

This position serves as a consultant to the Radioactive Materials Branch and the Radiation Protection Section on radiological health matters, interpretation of federal and state regulations and rules governing the control and use of radioactive materials and the use of accelerators for research, industrial, and medical use. The position handles complex licensing and health physics questions from the public and liaises with the public, the Radiation Protection Commission and the Department to develop rules and licensing guidance for the implementation of the state's radiation safety program. This position also participates in the radiological emergency response program, and may be tasked with responding to non-nuclear power plant emergencies and incidents involving radioactive materials or accelerators.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • In-depth knowledge of NCGS 104E, 10A NCAC 15, and 10 CFR applicable to Agreement States.
  • In-depth knowledge of radiation safety topics in health physics in non-nuclear power settings.
  • Proficiency using MSOffice products and NRC's web-based licensing, SS&D registry, and the nuclear materials event databases.
  • Experience in a state or federal radiation protection regulatory program.
  • NRC licensing training through NRC coursework.
  • At least introductory exposure to rule making on a state or federal level.
  • In-depth knowledge of NCGS 150B or an ability to correctly interpret and use the Statute.
  • This is a position that deals with varied topics ranging from advising members of the public on radiation safety issues, advising radioactive materials licensing staff and inspections staff on regulatory issues, and determining the best path forward to solve complex rule-making issues while liaising with the public.
