About The Position

Under the supervision of the Utility or Plant Supervisor, the Environmental Operator in Training (EOIT) Intern will perform unskilled and semi-skilled work in sewer collections, water distribution, stormwater management, wastewater treatment and water treatment. This position will rotate through the division sections on a four (4) month rotation. Individual in this position must be interested in mechanical processes and how to maintain and repair equipment. Must have an interest in how environmental processes are used to clean our water. Tasks will include all duties associated with water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities. Position will be required to complete basic water and wastewater correspondence courses. This is a temporary position lasting a maximum of 999 hours in twelve (12) month period. Employment will be 20-40 hours a week. This position will not be part of the on-call rotation schedule.

Requirements

  • This is an entry level position requiring minimum experience with hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Must be 17 and possess a valid Kansas driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred or currently enrolled in high school.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and science preferred.
  • Must be able to use and read a tape measure, operate electronic devices (i.e., computer, iPad, cell phone), and a willingness to learn how to operate small mowers, hand tools, and small electrical motors.

Responsibilities

  • Grounds, equipment, and building maintenance including mowing, trimming, cleaning, painting, greasing, oiling, adjusting, etc.
  • Proper sample collection of water, wastewater, and stormwater including basic analysis as qualified.
  • Conduct regular plant and stormwater outfall observations using senses.
  • Conduct, log, and document stormwater inspections visually and through assistance using CCTV.
  • Read and record meter readings accurately.
  • Regular operation of a shovel, poking rod, valve wrench, and various other hand tools required to complete underground water, sewer, and stormwater tasks.
  • Equipment replacement and repair.
  • Helps Street Division with snow removal.
  • Fire Hydrant flow and pressure testing.
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
  • Helps with Stormwater education presentations and communication.
