About The Position

The Environmental Sciences Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for an Environmental Laboratory Certification Officer. The SLPH Environmental Sciences laboratories offer comprehensive analysis of drinking water and other environmental samples, as well as milk/dairy products, through microbiological, inorganic, organic and radiochemical testing. This position is an auditor in the Laboratory Certification Office and certifies laboratories reporting Safe Drinking Water Act compliance sample results to the North Carolina Public Water Supply section. This position may also certify analysts performing testing for compliance with the FDA Grade A Pasteurized Milk Ordinance. This requires a thorough review of laboratory documentation and proficiency test results, and the conduct of on-site audits of instrumentation, personnel, facilities and analytical procedures. Findings and reports produced by this position are subject to review by federal auditors as part of the laboratory’s drinking water and milk laboratory/analysts certification requirements. This position must attend any assigned EPA or FDA training and must complete all tasks required to maintain certification. The Environmental Laboratory Certification Office is based in Raleigh, NC. Overnight travel, both in-state and outside North Carolina, is required of this position. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the NC Office of State Budget and Management's travel policy. This position must have a valid NC driver’s license.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience; OR, An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of biological, chemical (both organic and inorganic) and radiochemical theories and analytical methods, and instrumentation used in drinking water analysis, and preferably with the testing of milk and dairy products.
  • Knowledge of the laws, regulations and agency policies governing the area of responsibility, and of scientific methodology and laboratory safety practices.
  • Experience with state and federal regulations associated with the EPA Safe Drinking Water Laboratory Certification and FDA Milk Analyst/Laboratory Certification Programs.
  • Documented experience reviewing and expressing technical information clearly, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data packet review of laboratory documentation submitted to the Drinking Water Certification Office as part of an audit.
  • Perform onsite audits of laboratories within the state on a biennial basis and generate reports of finding.
  • Review laboratory audit responses for acceptable corrections of deviations.
  • Provide in-person and online trainings to laboratory analysts to ensure high-quality analytical testing.
