The Work Position Summary The Level 4 Environmental Lab Engineer is the technical owner of all activities that move a laboratory test request from concept to certified result. The role blends detailed engineering work (quoting, test definition, fixture design) with project coordination (scheduling, JIRA governance, external site liaison) and continuous improvement leadership. The engineer also mentors junior staff to assure knowledge continuity across the lab. This engineer will direct work to the dedicated lab technician in test methodologies and priorities. Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in a Engineering discipline
  • Strong written and verbal skills; ability to serve as primary liaison for internal customers and external subcontractors
  • Experience in at least 3 environmental testing areas: Thermal, Mechanical Vibration and Shock, Humidity, Salt Atmosphere, etc.
  • Equipment calibration and preventive maintenance processes
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance at the SECRET level

Nice To Haves

  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt
  • Deep familiarity with MIL STD 167 1A, 901, 781, 202, 310, STANAG 4370, EVQS, SRVM
  • Experience with predictive maintenance platforms (IoT sensors feeding LIMS)
  • CAD modeling & FEA review for fixtures
  • Data acquisition (Fluke 1586A, SR785) and analysis
  • Prior involvement in equipment procurement roadmaps and cost benefit analyses
  • Acoustic testing knowledge (noise test standards)

Responsibilities

  • Quoting - Generate labor hour and material cost estimates; articulate cost drivers (labor, consumables, equipment usage) using historic data and standard rates. Submit quotes for program approval within defined deadlines.
  • Test Definition - Identify required environmental tests and map them to the correct MIL STD / STANAG specifications leveraging the IHIS tool to retrieve standard clauses and revisions. Aligning test methods with UUT capabilities and equipment limits while documenting a test matrix in the test plan.
  • Scheduling - Create realistic test schedules with program managers and balance overall lab workload. Populate and manage the master lab calendar while highlighting and communicating resource conflicts.
  • JIRA Management - Ensure every lab request is entered, kept current, and closed in JIRA while attaching supporting documents (quotes, test plans).
  • Test Set up Planning - Define pre test environmental limits (thermal, vibration, shock, humidity, salt, altitude) and coordinate chamber, shaker, fixture, power, and cabling preparations.
  • Equipment Maintenance - Initiate facilities work orders, oversee HVAC, and guarantee equipment calibration.
  • Supplies & Vendor Management - Manage relationships with key vendors and process purchase requests.
  • Program Specific Support - Provide environmental expertise for each active program. Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, verification planning. Advise on requirement resolution and mitigation strategies.
  • Continuous Improvement - Lead Lean/Six Sigma projects to improve lab throughput, data quality, and cost efficiency. Propose equipment upgrades, process refinements, workflow automations.
  • Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer - Train Level 2/3 engineers on quoting, JIRA workflow, fixture design; ensure succession planning.
